Maps
Of course it is important to have a decent map when travelling around France, it is a very large country and although well signposted it is still quite easy to get lost when you turn off the major road.
The Institute Geographique National or "IGN" is the French Ordnance Survey and their maps all start with IGN.
IGN901 at a scale of 1: 1,000,000 is ideal for route planning, the IGN Red Series at 1: 250,000 is perfect for touring, the IGN Green Series at 1: 100,000 is ideal for tourism but for the serious walkers you will need the IGN Blue Series at 1: 50,000 and below.
Of course there are the usual AA, RAC and Michelin guides when driving but when you start to explore the French countryside be sure to pick up the local "IGN" map.
