The French railway system or SNCF is excellent value, clean and pretty much always on time. Of course there is now the high speed Eurostar link from St Pancras International London to Gare du Nord International Paris. Once in France the system is easy to use and most large stations have staff that speak English.
It is also worth noting that they do shut some of the more rural lines in the winter but always offer a bus service in its place but be careful as the timetable is usually different and can catch you out.
You can also board the Motorail trains with your car and take the leg work out of the journey across France and there are deals for students and OAPs.
