Founded by Bernard, the Fontenay Abbey is the most complete ensemble remaining in Burgundy of life in a medieval monastery. Solitary and independent in a remote valley, it took its name from its numerous fountains. From the ramparts to the prison, all the buildings corresponding to the life of the community are preserved. The church and cloister are examples of Cistercian simplicity intended to be piously modest, without sculpture or ornamentation of any kind, the bare-paving and immaculate columns.
